Mettawa

Mettawa, 35 miles from the Loop, is a very secluded, nature- lover's haven.

Bounded on the west by the Des Plaines River, it includes acres of thickly wooded nature preserves.

"Residents tend to be private and ecologically minded. Mettawans appreciate the fact that the village is, in effect, an island of tranquility surrounded by a sea of development," said Ray Hirth, Mettawa's former village clerk.

The village is all residential and bounded by the Old School Forest Preserve on the north, Captain Daniel Wright Forest Preserve on the south and the Des Plaines River Trail on the west. As a result, the community has been called "a horse owner's Utopia".

Despite its low profile, the village received attention, in 1992, when it edged out several more well-known suburbs as Illinois' wealthiest community. According to the then newly-released U.S. Census Bureau figures, its per capita income was slightly ahead of perennial favorites such as Kenilworth, Glencoe and Inverness.

Homes with expansive yards are ready-made recreational outlets, but the Lake County Forest Preserve system is right on Mettawa's doorstep.

Housing. Many of Mettawa's contemporary and ultra-modern homes have been featured in architectural magazines. The home prices range from about $500,000 into the millions. The average sale price, in 2000, was $863,750.

Schools.
Elementary students go to Rondout School in District 72. Most of Mettawa's high schoolers attend Libertyville Township High School, in District 128, where the 2000 average composite ACT score was 24.6.

Transportation. The Tri-State Tollway (I-294) is nearby for a 65-minute drive to the Loop. O'Hare is a 55 minute drive, and Midway Airport is 80 minutes away. Mettawa's residents may board Metra's Milwaukee Road trains from the Lake Forest or Libertyville stations. Express service to the Loop takes about 45 minutes; while locals take one hour.
